World Cup (Sticker) Fever
The World Cup in South Africa is nearly upon us and we here at the office (well, two thirds) have started to get in the spirit of things: getting the beers and barbecue in ready for the big game, checking out the Rocky Horror Picture Show hairstyles of yesteryear, salivating at the prospect of our boys losing again, and buying the official World Cup sticker album! What better way to show your love for your country than by collecting the team in small rectangular form, showing your support for the players with ever so slightly crooked stuck on portraits? Those were the days!
The playground years of fair trading; rummaging through the collection of your fellow trader, crushing him with a dismissive “got” for every disappointment, then that moment of discovery- proclaiming “need!”- that made it all worthwhile. Then the bartering would begin. By the end you would hopefully walk away in a better state than when you entered the negotiations. Getting the stickers you needed was only stage one however, as you then had to place the stickers in their rightful place.
First, by trying to place your fingernail right in between the sticker and the backing paper, and when that inevitably failed, you would simply make a fold in the corner, then scrape the sticker off, leaving you with a collection of stickers with only one crease, right in the corner, everytime. The excitement of completing a page, reaching that tipping point when you have more completed than not, when you can see the end. I haven’t felt like that since… 2008 (I completed my Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull album).
So enjoy your collection, enjoy the football, and keep an eye out on our blog for any possible swaps!
