HTML5 and the ‘canvas’ tag

Video Title: HTML5 Image Uploader
Video Description: Mozilla’s Paul Rouget gives a demo of an image uploader created using only Open Web technologies.

My role at Creativitea* is lead web designer which means I am always looking at articles and posts about the future of web design and web development. Recently I have been reading about HTML5 which is just round the corner. HTML5 the fifth major revision of the core language of the world wide web. This revision is rumored to really shake things up and add simplicity and some real creative and fun elements to our markup.

Now one of the many new tags that I keep hearing about is the Canvas Tag which was originally introduced by Apple for use in their own web kit component for use in their Dashboard and Safari. Canvas consists of a drawable region with width and height attributes which allows for dynamically placed drawing functions for use in image galleries, games, animations and charts.

Now I am sure this is going to be a nightmare to cross browser test and will be some debate in the community about Apple’s input but hey, as the video shows, this looks to be something quite exciting which I am hoping to be as accessible as one would expect in this day and age of web development, who knows it may even work on the iPhone or iPad!

Personally I am looking forward to have a play and possibly use it on a photography site or anything really!
